You can manually enter the short-term trades into TradeMax and then Export a TXF file to software which support Schedule D to generate schedule D.

Alternately generate a Schedule D-1 form in TradeMax based on the short-term trades data and then number this report as an attachment to Efile with Schedule D.

Does TradeMax handle multiple currencies across multiple portfolios and accounts ?


I am a Non-USD trader who is managing 5-6 accounts for my family and I trade Equities, Options, Futures etc. Does TradeMax handle multiple currencies across multiple portfolios and accounts?

TradeMax supports individual view and combined views, which mean you can setup different accounts to import your data files from different brokers to calculate your capital gains. TradeMax also supports combining different accounts into a new view, with the function, you can handle all of your trade data in a combined account.

I can’t find my data files.


TradeMax® program files and user-created data files are auto-saved in different directories in a user’s computer.

  • The default location for TradeMax® set-up and program files is “c:\program files\trademax“, unless the user has specified these files to another directory during the TradeMax installation process.
  • The default location for data files created by the user is “my documents\trademax

NOTE: The location of program and data files may vary depending on the configuration of a user’s computer. For example, data files may be saved in “c:\documents and settings\user name\my documents\trademax” or another location.

Install TradeMax in Windows 7 or Vista


Why run TradeMax as an administrator in Windows 7 or Vista?

If your PC system is Win 7 or  Vista , you will be required to run TradeMax as an administrator during the process of  handling your transaction charts or reports. The following are four options for you to choose from as for how to run TradeMax as an ademinstrator in Windows 7 or Vista.

How to run TradeMax as an administrator in Windows 7 or Vista ?

When running Trademax, you are given a Access Denied or No Permission type error, then running it as an administrator can usually give the program the permission it needs to run properly. The following wizard will tell you how to run TradeMax in Windows7:

Option One: Disable and Turnoff UAC (User Account Control) in Windows 7 from Control Panel

  1. Access User Control Panel from Start Menu -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Account
  2. Click on User Account Control settings link.
  3. Move the Slider to Never Notify
  4. Click OK to make the change effective
  5. Reboot.

Option Two : Using Program Context menu which allows you to temporarily run a program as an administrator once until you close it.

  1. Right click Trademax.exe file, and click on Run as administrator. (See screenshot below)
  2. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes to apply permission to allow the program to run with full permission as an administrator.NOTE: If you are doing this is while logged in as standard user instead of an administrator, then you will need to provide the administrator’s password before the program will run as administrator.

Option Three : Using Compatibility Mode

  1. Right click on the TradeMax shortcut or TradeMax .exe file, then click on Properties, and on the Compatibility tab. (See screenshot below)NOTE: If you are doing this while logged on as a standard user instead of an administrator, then you will need to also click on the Change settings for all users button and type in the administrator’s password.
  2. To Always Run this Program as an Administrator
  3. A) Check the Run this program as an administrator box, and click on OK. (See screenshot above)

  4. To Not Always Run this Program as an Administrator
  5. A) Uncheck the Run this program as an administrator box, and click on OK. (See screenshots above)

  6. Open TradeMax

Option Four: Using Advanced Properties which allow you to always have the program run as an administrator when you open it.

  1. Right click on the TradeMax shortcut or TradeMax.exe file, then click on Properties.
  2. Click on the Shortcut tab for a program shortcut, or click on the General tab for a program .exe file. Click on the Advanced button. (See screenshots below)
  3. To Always Run this Program as an Administrator A) Check the Run as administrator box, and click on OK. (See screenshot below)NOTE: The option to select this from the General tab (step 2) is not available in a standard user account.
  4. To Not Always Run this Program as an Administrator

Delete an Account


TradeMax allows you to setup an account, combine accounts and it also allows you to delete a specific account.

  1. Right click a specific account ( for example, ScoreTrade Jones) and select Delete Account in the context menu.

  2. pop up the following dialog box

  3. Type in delete to delete the account.


    Note: Delete an account will delete all data in that account.

Delete Trades


If you find duplicated records in the data grid, TradeMax allows you to delete them with just a few clicks, as follows:

  1. Select the records you want to delete in the Grid

  2. Right-click the selected records and select the Trade Delete from its context menu

Import QIF file into TradeMax


TradeMax provides you the facility to Import data from more advanced formats which a majority of the brokers support. You can import Quicken(*.qif)  or Text files etc.

The importing process is also a profile setting up process. It provides you with a wizard to filter the useful trade data, match the data, and then generate a TradeMax data format for the following tax calculation purpose; here is the wizard to import QIF file into TradeMax step by step

  1. Export the trade data in quicken: After you ran Quicken, select File> Export> QIF File, then follow the instructions in Quicken software to store QIF file into your desirable directory.
  2. Run TradeMax, select the account into which you want to import QIF data.
  3. Right click the selected account, and select “Import” , the following dialog pops up.
    Function Description
    Account Select an account to import your data
    Trade Range Automatically display the date range of existing trades in the current account
    Import File Select data file from your computer
    Mode If you already have a user name and password of the selected account, select I want to connect to ***. I have a *** user name and password.
    If you have trade data in your computer, please select I want to import data from local file.
    Auto Assign Short If this function is activated, whenever TradeMax imports a sell before a buy for a symbol with no shares currently open, the trade will be recorded as short.
    Note:You shouldn’t select Auto Assign Short if you did not Enter the Baseline Positions or Include the Baseline Position. In this case, TradeMax will assign the close long transaction as an open short transaction.
    Convert Short to Long With One Transaction If your online brokerage accounts allow the conversion of an open, short position to an open, long position with a single buy transaction (and vice versa). You can activate Convert Short To Long function to allow TradeMax to make the necessary adjustments during the import process. TradeMax will automatically split up the single “buy” transaction into two – one to close the short position, and another to open up a new long position.
    Include Baseline If you have already appended baseline position, you will need to select the checkbox and enter your specific tax year or select it with the arrows at the right side
  4. Select I want to Import Data from Local file and make furthering settings, click Next to display the window below:
    • Select Quicken Interchange Format(*.QIF) from dropdown list in Profile Field.
    • Type, Record Separator, Field Separator, Text Qualifier are the default QIF forms.
    • Select data file from your computer
  5. Click Next to the next step.

Delete a View


TradeMax allows you to delete view easily.

Right-click on a specific view (for example, Jones & Rachel) under the broker tree and select Delete View function in the context menu to delete the view

Download Data from Investrade


The following steps will show you how to download data from Investrade.

  1. Login your Investrade trade account.
  2. Click Account Information > Activity.
  3. Select Trades from the “Activity Type” drop down box.

  4. Unselect Current check box , then set a specific time range.
  5. Your Trade History report will display, the report should contain the right columns as shown below:

    Account Type | Trade Date | Settle Date | Exec Time | Trade Number | CUSIP/Symbol | ISIN | Description | Buy/Sell | Qy | Price | Principal Amt | Comm | Other Comm | Net Amount | Curr

  6. Click Download Data icon

  7. Select Delimited text file and Comma delimited and then click the Download now button

  8. Click the Save button.
  9. Click Save button in Save In drop down dialog box.
  10. Run TradeMax and setup an Investrade account to import trade activity data from local file.
